Welcome to Islandflats

Early in the summer of 2000, we lost our mixed breed girl, Ginger at the age of 12 to cancer. While researching our next dog, we learned a lot about the Flat-Coated Retriever, and after meeting many flatcoats and their owners we knew that this would be the right breed for us. Late that summer, we were fortunate enough to bring home a puppy boy, Bailey - our first flatcoat - from K'Mander Kennels in Connecticut. Many folks warned us that these dogs are like potato chips (you can't have just one) and they were right! In the winter of 2002, our girl Crystal was born at TLC Retrievers in western New York. In the fall of 2004 our third flatcoat Logan, was born at K'Mander Kennels. It was at that time that we added a team name to our flock and "Islandflats" (we're from Long Island) was born. Since then, we've welcomed more Flatcoats, and a Field Spaniel to our family. This website is a celebration of our family and our dogs that we're proud to share with you.

We are active members in good standing with the American Kennel Club, the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America, The Mid-Atlantic Flat-Coated Retriever Club, the Nassau Dog Training Club and the Field Spaniel Society of America. We remain in constant contact with our Clubs, our dogs' breeders, and our own puppy people as they are a wealth of dog information in a variety of areas; and they are a wonderful support system during the good times and the bad.

Our dogs regularly participate in conformation, obedience and agility events. Feel free to browse our website, where we honor our dogs, and the many friends and families we've met through them.
